Once upon a time on social media, the nicest app of them all, Instagram, home to animal bloopers and filtered selfies, established a land called Threads, a hospitable alternative to the cursed X, Formerly Known as Twitter. The good people of X tried to flee, scattering to the hinterlands of Mastodon and Bluesky, whose distant confines they then complained about on X. It would be Twitter But Nice, a Good Place where X’s liberal exiles could gather around for a free exchange of ideas and maybe even a bit of that 2012 Twitter magic — the goofy memes, the insider riffing, the meeting of new online friends. With many key functions still in development, Threads even had a pleasingly lo-fi ambience. I joined Threads shortly after its July 5 debut as an observer (having fled Twitter well before it X-ed itself out).

I've spent 10 years interviewing experts on longing, as well as people who've experienced limerence, for my podcast The Longing Lab, TEDx talk, and forthcoming book, "When Longing Becomes Your Lover." The emotional reward was the happy hormone dopamine I'd feel from imagining a relationship together or anticipating a response. Writing it down helped me believe it — and recognize my limerent feelings toward unavailable men as a dead end. I found his love and availability very attractive — something I never would have seen in my 20s and 30s.

In their quest to discover what makes love last, clinical psychologists and researchers John and Julie Gottman interviewed more than 3,000 couples and followed some for as long as 20 years. One commonality most successful couples had, the Gottmans found, was their ability to do "repairs." "The couples who really were successful a few years down the road were the ones who made repairs," Julie Gottman told Perel. Positive interactions included a smile, touching the other person's hand, or simply saying "I understand." Negative interactions were insulting or blaming the other person.
